Hey guys! If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ll know I’ve been doing a juice cleanse this week, guided by Olivia and Pam. The idea is that each day you drink fresh juices until around 5pm, then you can eat a raw or lightly cooked dinner.
I’ve been doing this type of juice cleanse once a week for about 2 months now but I’ve never done a continuous juice cleanse for more than 1 day. The idea seemed a bit scary, but I thought to myself that I don’t have to commit – if I feel like I need to cut the juice cleanse short, I can. If I go 3 days, that’s fine. If I go 5 days, that’s even better. And if I go the full 7 days, that’s awesome, but no pressure Kyra!
It turned out much easier than I thought it would be. It’s kind of similar to Bella Swan’s transition to becoming a vampire (sorry for the Twilight simile here…) – I guess I just knew what to expect from my previous 1 day juice cleanses, so I was very mentally prepared for the 7 day cleanse. Just like how Bella had immersed herself in the supernatural world for so long before she finally became a vampire herself, so by the time she was a vampire, she wasn’t a crazy newborn who could only think about drinking blood. Just like me – I’d gone without solid food on my previous cleanses, so by the time this 7 day cleanse came around, I was prepared and knew what to expect, I wasn’t some crazy food stalker, watching the clock tick by until 5pm so I could stuff my face :D no, seriously, that didn’t happen…much.
Mind over matter
Anyway, I thought it would be useful to share with you guys how I felt during my cleanse and what it was like. I know many of you are curious about doing juice cleanses but you feel like it would be too hard to go without food. I really like this method of just juicing until 5pm, so I can still have afternoon tea, dinner and dessert (and midnight snack ;) ) before doing it all again the next day. Just knowing that I can eat later in the day makes it so much more bearable!
7 Day Juice Cleanse Diary
Day 1: I’ll admit I was thinking about not even doing the juice cleanse this week. I kept making excuses for myself. I’m too busy this week…I’ve been sick, this isn’t a good time for me, I’ll do it when I feel better…etc. I had come down with the flu over the weekend so I wasn’t feeling great at all, and I guess I just wasn’t feeling motivated. But, day 1 came and I threw myself into the cleanse anyway, and you know what? It made me feel awesome! The lingering symptoms from the flu – a cough, sore throat, runny nose – they just went. I felt clear headed and motivated.
Day 2: Still feeling motivated, I made my juices early in the morning so they would be ready to drink as soon as I needed them. No sign of that flu! My stomach feels trimmer today too, finally trimming down on some of that lingering baby weight!
Day 3: Feeling so great today! As well as my juices, I drank 1 litre of chilled olive leaf tea today – it’s great for drawing toxins out of the body. My teeth were hurting a bit today though – I think it’s because they just aren’t getting used as much. I’ll have to “chew” my juice tomorrow to help get some teeth action happening.
Day 4: Wow! My skin was glowing today. My husband said I looked radiant. It might be a combination of things (the heat making my skin shine with sweat, maybe? Haha) but I also think juicing had a great deal to do with it too. I’m so used to juicing now, breakfast time is not difficult to get through with just some juice. Lunch time is a bit harder as I have to be more involved in the kitchen fixing the kids some lunch, but I just sipped my juice to overcome those cravings.
Day 5: I felt nervous today as I had an interview for clinical placement for my herbal medicine course at 3pm – earlier in the day I was considering eating some lunch and breaking my juice cleanse for the day a bit earlier, but I ended up feeling so energised on juice that I didn’t need to! I did drink close to 2 litres of juice today though, a bit more than usual.
Day 6: Nothing new to report today – my skin is still so clear and I feel energetic, not sluggish like I was feeling before the cleanse (although I didn’t realise I felt sluggish then – just feeling how energetic I am now makes me realise how sluggish I was…if that makes sense?). I’m really enjoying this juice cleanse, I’ve gotten into a great routine of chopping my veggies & fruits the previous afternoon, and juicing first up in the morning while I sip a glass of water with the juice of half a lemon. (By the way – I have one of those manual cold-press juicers – no electricity, just powered by me, I turn the crank and it crunches up the veg/fruit into juice. Well, every Monday it used to feel like such a chore having to make juice for my weekly juice cleanse, but now it’s like a fun arm workout every morning! Maybe I’ve gotten stronger too, because my arm doesn’t feel like falling off after I’ve made the juice these days either, haha.)
Day 7: Yay, I made it! Seven days with just juices until 5ish. I honestly didn’t think I would make it this far, but right now I’m feeling I could do this for another 7 days, seriously! Juicing has given me so much energy – today I thoroughly cleaned my house and was still bouncing around after that. If you drink enough juice, you’ll get enough kilojoules to supply you with pretty of energy for your daily activities. Yet at the same time, I’ve definitely lost some of that stubborn baby-weight around my belly, leftover from having 3 kids. My stomach isn’t flat now, but it doesn’t look like I’m 5 months pregnant anymore when I’m not, haha :D
My thoughts on juice cleansing
If you’ve been thinking about doing a juice cleanse, I highly recommend you try it out. If you follow the same approach as I did (juices until 5pm and then eat something light for dinner) it makes it sooo much easier. I drank between 1-2 litres of juice each day – freshly juiced in the mornings – along with water and chilled herbal tea. I found it helpful to drink the juice slowly, savoring each mouthful – this helped me feel satisfied for longer. Juicing gave me energy, mental clarity, clear skin, and it just made me feel happy!
