I fell in love with the True Blood television series 2 years ago, and then proceeded to read the entire Sookie Stackhouse novel series while I waited for the last True Blood season to be aired. I loved the mix of supernatural beings that lived within our world (which I guess is similar to my fascination of Twilight). Vampires, fairies, shapeshifters, werewolves…they were all presented in a way that made me believe they existed.
So naturally, when it came to brainstorming ideas for my Halloween recipe collection this year, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make some True Blood. For those of you who have no idea about the True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse stories, True Blood is the brand of an artificial blood drink that allowed vampires to “come out of the coffin” as they no longer needed to drink human blood to be able to survive.
If I ever become a vampire, I hope I can survive on this version of True Blood…for now, I’m content on drinking this as a human. Beetroot is a good source of folate, manganese and vitamin C. Tomatoes and carrots are both rich sources of beta-carotene, plus vitamins C & K. These nutrients will aid with proper growth and development, brain development, blood clotting (the good kind, that prevents excessive bleeding), good vision, and immune system function. Honestly, by drinking this juice I think your body would be well equipped to fight off vampire venom and prevent the change ;)
In reality, this True Blood recipe is nothing more than the juice of tomatoes, carrots, beetroots and celery. Myself and my husband enjoyed sipping this bloody vegetable juice, but the kids enjoyed it with some apple juice mixed in. Blood orange juice would also be appropriate…
- 3 tomatoes
- 2 carrots
- 1 large celery stalk + leaves
- 2 small beetroots
- Peel the carrot and beetroot if not organic.
- Chop the vegetables into pieces that will fit through your juicer, and juice.
- ALTERNATIVELY blend all ingredients in a high speed blender and strain through a sieve lined with muslin cloth.
- Drink immediately or store in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
