As a vegan, I’ve personally found a number of apps to be extremely helpful to help me maintain my lifestyle. From dining out to buying the groceries, there are many vegan iPhone apps to help you. Here is my shortlist of must-have apps for vegans.
As the Apple slogan says: “there’s an app for that.”

Vegaholic – $2.49
I always promote the Barnivore website when people ask about vegan alcoholic drinks. However it can be difficult to remember which brands are vegan when you are at the liquor store. The Vegaholic app makes shopping for beer, wines and spirits a breeze for vegans! While in store, you can search for a particular brand or product to ensure they are vegan. This app works offline too. Vegaholic costs AU$2.49, but is definitely worth it if you like to browse the wine aisle or frequently try new beers ;)
Happy Cow – $3.79
The Happy Cow website is a comprehensive list of vegetarian/vegan places to dine and has helped me find many places to eat. Now Happy Cow is available on your iPhone with this handy app! The Happy Cow app has a great selection of veg-friendly places to eat in not only Australia, but all over the world. This app is really useful if you are traveling and need to rely on dining out. For just AU$3.79, it is great value, especially if it means you can find something more substantial to eat than another large fries from McDonald’s…
Vegman – FREE
The Vegman app is another app which is useful for finding veg-friendly places to eat in your area. Although it is not as comprehensive as the Happy Cow app, I have still managed to find a number of local veg-friendly restaurants here in Australia using Vegman. The app also lists veg-friendly places to dine worldwide, so it is a handy addition to your iPhone when traveling. The Vegman app is FREE.
Chemical Maze – $8.99
I love the Chemical Maze app! I started off with the free version but ended up buying the full version for $8.99. The free version is quite useful and gives you valuable information about common additives, however the complete edition lists every additive so you won’t be left wondering if an ingredient is vegan or not. This app is really user friendly – you can search by additive name or number, and the results will tell you where the ingredient may be derived from, the potential effects and possible uses. I have used this app many, many, many times when at the grocery store to check out various ingredients. At first I was reluctant to pay so much for an app but I am so glad I did; if you care about your health and not eating any animal derived products, this app is for you! Get the free version here or the complete edition for $8.99 here.
