I came across this question on a forum years ago – “is toothpaste vegan?” – which at first I may have laughed at such a bizarre question, but it is actually a really good question. Who knows what they actually put in toothpaste, as a glance at the ingredients list can sometimes reveal a chemical slurry with words I can’t even pronounce.
You can make your own vegan homemade toothpaste using just 4 ingredients, in about 2 minutes! Xylitol is an amazing product – it is a natural sweetener which can be derived from the birch tree or corn cobs, and actually repairs the enamel on your teeth! And of course, bicarb soda will whiten your smile. You can use peppermint essential oil to give your toothpaste that fresh minty taste, or use other essential oils as you desire – I have added tea tree oil on occasion for it’s anti-bacterial properties.
Soften the coconut oil if it is hard, then add the bicarb soda and xylitol and essential oil. Stir to combine, and you have made your own toothpaste! Store in a small glass jar with lid – will keep for several months at least.
